Many thanks for taking the time to visit my Just Giving page
I'm raising money for the Pancreatic Cancer UK organisation (see http://www.pancreaticcancer.org.uk/)
My next escapade/fundraising event will be a 1 mile swim in the Serpentine on 22nd September 2018. As I've been injured for the past 6 months I have concentrated my efforts on swimming rather than running. I'm not a natural swimmer and only swim breast stroke so this will be a big achievement for me.
I don't have a fundraising target for this event but any donations would be greatly received and will help to raise vital funds for Pancreatic Cancer UK.
Why I am raising money for the Pancreatic Cancer UK organisation
I set up this page on 20th May 2011 as my Mum’s husband, David Mellor (a normally fit, sprightly 70+ individual) was taken very ill at the end of 2010 and after various tests he was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. Due to the advanced stage of the cancer it was not operable and the prognosis was not good – 6/12 months without chemotherapy and slightly longer 12/18 months with chemotherapy. David opted for chemotherapy but it made him very ill and treatment had to be stopped after only a few sessions. After a few weeks without chemotherapy he was told he could commence it again but only at half the dose. However, if it made him ill they may have to stop it completely. Not good news.
David had been a professional drummer for most of his life and even up to the point when he was taken ill he was still playing the drums in the 4+1 jazz band. Unfortunately he had to give this up which was a shame as this was one thing (along with his rounds of golf) which kept him active. David passed away on Wednesday, 1st June 2011 after a short stay in University Hospital Walsgrave's Oncology ward. A drummer extraordinaire who will be greatly missed by all his family, friends and band members. It's certainly going to be a noisy place in heaven :o)
What I've done to raise money and awareness for pancreatic Cancer UK
I decided to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer UK in various ways - car boot sales, cakes sales and even signed up to run the London Marathon in 2012. I completed it in 5:27:40 whilst running carrying a set of David's drumsticks - not bad for a first attempt! I secured a place in the London Marathon ballot to run in 2013 but had to pull out due to injury. However I managed to defer and ran again in 2014 completing it in 4:53:08. I also did a charity head shave to mark Pancreatic Cancer Awareness month in November 2013 and trekked to Everest Base Camp over Christmas 2013/New Year 2014 and again I carried David's drumsticks with me all the way. I organised an 'Evening of Music' in memory of David in his village which was well supported by his former band mates and local businesses donated many items for raffle prizes. My initial fundraising target was £3,000 and I soon achieved this and then increased it to £6,000 and £10,000.
I attended a debate at the Houses of Parliament in September 2014 which was held to raise the profile of pancreatic cancer and to encourage more funding and research into the disease. An E-petition had been launched by Maggie Watts to help push pancreatic cancer higher up the political agenda and the e-petition achieved over 106,000 signatures in March 2014 (helped by a number of dedicated followers on Facebook) which then led to the debate being heard.
Please take time to visit Pancreatic Cancer UK's website (see http://www.pancreaticcancer.org.uk/) to see the work they are involved in – from research, to providing information to those who are affected with the disease and helping you with fundraising ideas. They also have events you can get involved in to raise money. If you have any spare pennies or £s please feel free to make a donation (don't forget to Gift Aid your donation).
Donating through Just Giving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with Just Giving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
So please dig deep and donate now, even if it’s only £1.00
