This challenge is part of a whole host of events and charity collections being staged for our annual Red Cross Week (6 - 12 May). Our theme this year is ‘One in a Million’ – showing that if lots of people come together to do something small that raises just a few pounds, we’ll meet this target.

We are going to spend three nights (1 – 4 June 2012) deserted on an island in the centre of a small lake on the Discovery Walk trail at Priory Farm, Surrey, with just enough for our basic survival.

We wanted to raise awareness of the most basic needs which lives are resorted to after a disaster – like shelter, water and food. After being rowed over to the lake we will be left on the island for three nights with just the basic tools for our survival.

We are going to be stuck there eating rice and beans, have to construct our own shelter and build a compost latrine. The only thing we will be taking over with us is firewood and water.

We hope to highlight some of the conditions the Red Cross works under and although we will not be in severe crisis, the discomfort of trying to emulate these conditions will give us and others an insight into the plight of those in crisis and hopefully raise valuable funds for the charity.
