Finishing the Marathon des Sables is not going to be easy. I've already started the mental preparation: if I can go without alcohol for three and a half months in the run-up to the event (not a drop since 2 January!) then hopefully the same will-power will get me through the 240 kms. And I've also launched in on the physical training: 5 sessions a week (3 at the gym and 2 pounding the streets and parks of London).

But none of this will be worth doing unless, as well as finishing the race, I also succeed in raising some money for the rhino and community conservation projects in Africa and Asia that we support. I know you might think "Not the bloody rhinos again" or words to that effect, but:
1. They're fantastic beasts and it would be awful if there were none left (a distinct possibility)
2. Saving rhinos does also bring economic, social and environmental benefits for the people around the National Parks and reserves where rhinos live
3. Finally, the thought of your sponsorship will help keep me going - I have a nasty feeling my willpower needs every prop it can get.
