Story

Couch to 3700km...
In December 2016 my brother in law, Steven Holbrook, lost a hard fought battle with a Brain Tumour. He was a police officer, marathon runner, and all round good guy. He was a family man, husband to Carrie, and Dad to Emma (7) and Mason (4). Son to Angie and Barry, and brother to Adam.

Whilst fighting his cancer, he and his family and close friends raised >£60,000 for brain tumour charities, and raised awareness of the disease and its impact to others.

He was 37, and fit as a butchers dog. He hadn't always been that way, but one day decided enough was enough, put on his running shoes and started training to run a marathon. His determination was phenomenal, something he applied to his fight against his cancer.

So, I turn 37 this year and its fair to say i have rather neglected my own fitness for far too long. Life can be too short, we are not "that" young anymore. So Inspired by Steve, it is time to get off the couch, get fit and look after myself.

So 37 being the significant number, I have set myself the challenge to cycle 3700km in 2017. I'm currently about 3st overweight, so losing 37lbs in the process would also be a welcome bonus!

I'll be riding in a mixture of Sportives and solo rides, but there are two events that will be a big focus.   The Prudential RideLondon 100mile for which Brain Tumour Research have been so kind as to provide me with a place on.  The biggest challenge will almost certainly be supporting Adam, Steve's brother, in a 120mile ride from his home town in Bedfordshire to the East Coast town of Southwold.  That will be both physically and emotionally difficult I'm sure.

I'll add updates of my progress on here and facebook.

Please dig deep and support Brain Tumour Research so we can help at least one family who might face what Carrie, Steve, Emma and Mason faced together.

Thank you.

George

Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. Just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this disease. We are a leading voice calling for support and action for research into what is called the last battleground against cancer.
