The Chara Challenge was founded in 2009 after 3 Commando Brigade returned from their third tour of duty in Afghanistan.

During that tour 37 of our comrades were killed in action while a further 167 were seriously wounded. To date 54 members of 3 Commando Brigade have been killed serving their country in Afghanistan.

The purpose of the Chara Challenge is to raise money for those charities that have a proven record of providing benevolence services for our wounded comrades and the dependants of the fallen. In 2010 our supported charities are SSAFA, the Royal Marines Charitable Trust, BLESMA and Combat Stress.

The Chara Challenge is a demanding event that comprises two distinct races for people of differing ability and ambition:

· Chara 30 - 30 miles across Dartmoor carrying 32 pounds of weight (not including food or water but including safety equipment) in under 10 hours.
· Chara 15 - 15 miles across Dartmoor carrying 32 pounds of weight (not including food or water but including safety equipment) in under 7 hours.

The Chara Challenge is a test of endurance and character. It is also fun, immensely rewarding and worthy – the 2009 event raised over £100,000 for our supported charities.

The success of the event depends on the participation of people who want to challenge themselves to complete the race and to raise money for our supported charities. If you are one of those people then please submit an application form and become part of something very special.

The Chara Challenge – There is No Such Thing as Insurmountable Odds.

Please visit our website at http://www.charachallenge.com for further details of the event and ways to participate.  Thank you for your support.
