Story
My grandfather, Malcolm, has always been my hero and someone who I have always aspired to become. Until very recently, he was the wisest, most fun, and most upbeat man I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He has had such a full life: he rowed for Cambridge; flew with the RAF; ran a tea estate in Uganda (where daily challenges included saving people from snakes, leopards and guerrilla fighters). He lovingly raised a family of four; encouraged and nurtured us grandchildren as well; and was always there to be involved with my growing up; flying kites; building things; playing Rugby with my brother and me; sharing in my highs and lows at school, university and beyond.
However, he was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and his illness is progressing quickly. We, his family, have looked on as he has changed – almost unrecognisably – into being anxious, confused and almost reclusive. It has been most distressing to watch someone (knowing that he is far from the only one) deteriorate so quickly into a person who struggles to look after themselves. What makes it even harder is that he is so harsh on himself and gets frustrated that his mind and body don’t work like they used to.
Please help me raise funds for and awareness of Alzheimer’s Society, who work to make life bearable for people, like my grandfather, who have given so much, both to their family and to society. Your generosity is much appreciated.
