Shooting Star Children's Hospices is a leading children’s hospice charity caring for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families. Whether lives are measured in days, weeks, months or years, we are here to make every moment count.

Story

In September I have the opportunity to take part in an exciting and unique event. The boat clubs from both schools along with the support of the HHBCA are holding a sponsored row from Radley College BC, near Oxford, to the Millennium Boathouse.  This is a big weekend for the Boat Club and we hope to generate substantial funds for our nominated charity, the amazing Shooting Star Chase, Children’s Hospice Care.

Situated in Hampton, the Shooting Star Chase Hospice does incredible work for children with life limiting conditions. You can find out more about this great charity on their website: www.shootingstarchase.org.uk

We last held the sponsored row in 2015 and raised over £50,000 and hope to live up to the same standard this year! The event will run on the weekend of 22 and 23 September 2018.

The 80 mile row is split into two days, with the first day starting at Radley College Boat House, Oxford ending on Saturday evening in Henley. The crews will meet at 6.15am at Radley College Boat House; a safety briefing will be held at 6.30am and crews will start to boat from 7.00am to begin their epic row, aiming to reach Henley around 7.00pm. On the Sunday the crews will meet at 6.30am in Henley next to the Leander Club and boat around 7.00am; we hope to reach Hampton around 7.00pm.  All crews are accompanied along the Thames by safety boats with experienced rowing coaches and first aiders.

On day one we will negotiate 14 locks, which will also act as useful rest points. Locks will be manned by volunteer parents and staff, who will help to feed, water and generally keep an eye on all the rowers as they pass through.  There is a 30 minute lunch stop at Pangbourne College Boat Club, where crews will be able to get out and stretch whilst having their lunch. Day one will end after rowing 41.9 miles, on the historic Henley reach. The estimated time of arrival at Henley is between 6.30pm and 7.15 pm.

Rowers will regroup on Sunday morning (6.30am) to start their second day. With only 37.5 miles and 15 Locks left to go! Lunch on Sunday will be at Eton College Boat House. The estimated time for arriving at the finishing line at the Millennium Boat Club will be between 7.00pm and 8.00pm.
