Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

The Lynedoch's House Matron, Mrs E, has known 9 year-old Emily since the day she was born. Emily is very smart academically, very pretty and a joy to her parents, family and friends. However, over the last couple of years, various people (including Mrs E) have noticed she looses her balance at times; she is unable to ride a bike, use a scooter or do many of the other activities that normal 9 year olds can do. After being very ill over Christmas 2007, and subsequently attending many Hospital visits, having scans, X-Rays and numerous consultations with top paediatric doctors, Emily had been diagnosed with "FREDRICKS ATAXIA".

'Ataxia' means ‘absence of order’. It is a neurological sign and symptom consisting of severe lack of coordination of muscle movements. This condition is caused by gradual deterioration of the brain, causing complete loss of limb use, blindness, loss of speech, problems with swallowing and the loss of hearing. Currently, there is no cure for this condition, however there is extensive research being carried out under severe financial shortages. Today, 10,000 adults in the have ataxia, and the number of children with this illness is rapidly increasing.

Therefore, we have decided to take on the challenge of completing "Tough Guy 2010". Tough Guy is a physically challenging, mentally demanding, fear inducing, visual spectacular and claims to be the world's most demanding one day survival ordeal.

Tough Guy Race consists of a 13 mile cross country run followed by an assault course. Running the course involves risking barbed wire, cuts, scrapes, burns, dehydration, hypothermia, acrophobia, claustrophobia, delusionment, electric shocks, sprains, twists, joint dislocation and broken bones.

Having to deal with freezing waters, thick mud and severe exhaustion, this will be an extremely challenging event.
