In the run up to my Barmitzvah, whilst Mum is busy planning all the details of the Big Day, I have decided I want to do something to help others who are not as lucky as me, and am raising money myself, through a sponsored walk, for a Barmitzvah Twinning, through World Jewish Relief, with a boy from the Ukraine.
I could not believe it when I heard that there were Jewish children, the same age as me, living in abject poverty in the most terrible conditions.
We take our “Jewishness” for granted, but many of these children have only just found out they are Jewish, it is a new experience for them, they have never celebrated the Festivals, had Jewish friends, all things we take for granted.
I know how lucky I am to be growing up here in the UK, surrounded by my family and friends, who are I hope, looking forward to celebrating my Barmitzvah with me.
As I am approaching my 13th birthday and becoming a “Man” in the eyes of the Jewish world, I feel I should start taking responsibility for others who are not as fortunate as I am. I know I will get a sense of satisfaction in raising the money myself, by actually doing something, so that together with some of my friends, I can help other children who would otherwise not be able to have a Bar or Bat Mitzvah.
Each twinning costs £600.00 and I am trying to raise as much towards this as I can.
I have known about the great work World Jewish Relief does for many years, as my family have always been very involved in this Charity and I am so happy to be able to help in some small way too.
WJR will arrange for me to get updates on the children we are helping, so I will be able to get a bit of an insight into their lives. I intend to write to my twin and let him know that I am thinking about him too.
The Sponsored Walk will take place on Sunday 26 July in Halecroft Park, Hale Barns, and I would be very grateful if you were able to sponsor me.
I hope you will help me raise money to give a child much less fortunate than me a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, and given that I live in Manchester, please pray that it doesn’t rain!!
Best wishes
Charlie
