Emma and I are both staff nurses currently working on a busy surgical-oncology ward in the Bexley Wing (The Yorkshire Cancer Centre), St James University Hospital. In September 2010 we will be undertaking a great challenge to trek the in order to raise money for the Yorkshire Cancer Centre.
The Yorkshire Cancer Centre is already the largest cancer centre in providing specialist care for patients across the country. As a centre we are hoping to raise £10 million in order to enhance the existing facilities cancer patients receive and to ensure that we remain at the leading edge in cancer diagnosis, treatment and care. In order to raise these funds we will be undertaking various fundraising activities. One of our events will be to hold a raffle on the ward for patients, staff and relatives. We have appraoched local businesses to see who would be willing to donate prizes towards the raffle or to help this exceptional cause in any way possible.
At present we have obtained a night for two at The Bed and Breakfast, York; a cut and blowdry and a hamper of hair products from HCUK (Hair Cuttery UK, Headingley Branch); a treatment of choice from Beauty Works beauticians, Headingly. Other bussinesses such as Betty's Tearoom in Harrogate and Blacksheep brewery have also contributed towards the raffle.
Over the next few months we will be holding various fundraising events- Bag packing at our local Sainsbury's, a Coffee morning at Golcar Church in Huddersfield on 13th March; a fancy dress pub crawl along Otley Road in Headingley; a DJ mix night at The Factory (a local club in Leeds Centre) amongst others.

On Saturday 13th March we held our cofee morning at Golcar Church in Huddersfield. The morning was a great sucess and everybodybody got involved. We put on a raffle and also some 'gifty' stalls as well as selling a vast amount of baked goods. As a result we raised a grand total of £500!This coffee morning has been great motivation to get our other fundraising events off the ground!!
On the evening of Saturday 17th April we will be holding an evening at The Bay Horse, in Meanwood, Leeds. This evening will comprise of a quiz, stand-up sit-down bingo and a raffle with a disco to finish the night off. So, if you're up for a giggle and a good night with great company then come along and support us in our mission to aid the £10 million appeal!!
Last Saturday, 24th April, we held a quiz and disco night at the Bay Horse pub in Meanwood. It was a great night and the pub was packed. With the quiz, raffle, bingo and donations we managed to raise just short of £200. Thank you to all of you who came along, joined in and made the night such a success. Many thanks also to Phil and Jill, the pub landlords, for all thier hardwork and generousity- the buffet went down a treat.
On Wednesday 19th May we will be holding a Teddy Bears Picnic in Meanwood Park.It will be a great family day out from 3pm onwards.The day will consist of a teddy hunt around the park, a small treasure hunt, party games and refreshments. There will also be a prize for the best dressed teddy. Come down and join us for some family fun!!
The teddy bears picnic was a great success and we raised £100. Thank you to all of those who came down to the park , supported us and joined in the family fun!!
On Saturday 29th May we took part in the Roundhay Gala in aid of The Yorkshire Cancer Centre. We braved the elements and spent the day in the park sellling cakes. We also had a tombola, raffle and other games and as a result we raised the best part of £200. A huge thank you to all of you who donned their wellies and waterproofs and came and support us regardless of the excessive rain!!!
Over the next 6 weeks we will be holding a variety of charity events-
On Saturday 19th June we will be holding a family sports day on Soldiers field in Rounday Park. Come and join us for some family entertainment and reminis with some good old traditional events!
On Saturday 3rd Jully we are holding a BBQ at The Bay Horse Pub, Parkside Road, Meanwood from 2pm.
On Monday 5th July we are holding a DJ / Music Event at The Northern Monkey, The Headrow, Leeds (oppopsite Brown's Restaurant)- from 7pm onwards.The night will consist of various DJ's palying 1hr sets, a raffle and tombola. The tickets are £5 each and are avaiable from Charlotte and Emma.
