Over the past 6 years the patients, the team and the friends of Chipping Manor have enabled us to raise over £72,000 for the work of Bridge2Aid – this includes sending 9 of our team to go out to to get practically involved. This year the money we raise is going straight towards the funds needed to renovate the health centre at Bukumbi – a leprosy treatment centre just outside Mwanza - and for the first time we have some of our patients travelling with us to do the work that is so desperately needed.
In January, Phil and Shaenna were privileged enough to go and visit the Bukumbi Care Centre for the third time. Dr Julius is the Clinical officer for Bukumbi and the surrounding area. Dr Julius is responsible for carrying out all medical procedures; he delivers babies, dresses wounds, extracts teeth – you name it. Whilst we were visiting we witnessed Dr Julius treat and dress a woman’s ulcerated leg out in the open air with no privacy and surrounded by disease ridden flies. We want to be able to provide a clean, safe area for Dr Julius to care for these vulnerable patients who deserve the right to be treated with dignity. Dr Julius described having a clean safe building to work in as “a dream”.
