SIR BOBBY ROBSON

Cancer is a horrific disease, one that attacks indiscriminately.  It takes no account of your age, race or sex.  According to Cancer Research UK, every 1 in 3 people get cancer at some stage in their lives.  Sir Bobby Robson once said: “We all know people who’ve died from cancer, who’ve had cancer and who are on cancer” and speaking from my own perspective, I certainly know this to be true.

My Grandad Jimmy had cancer and was given the best possible treatment by the people of the NHS at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne.  Because of such fantastic treatment, my Grandad survived and is still living a happy and fulfilled life.

A footballing hero of mine, Sir Bobby Robson, had cancer 4 times in his life and beat it 4 times.  However, it came back for a 5 time and sadly, Sir Bobby lost his battle (possibly the only one in his life).

Since Sir Bobby Robson died, I’ve been thinking a lot about trying to do something as a way to say thanks to him for his contributions to Newcastle United over the years, as well as saying thanks to the great Dr’s and Nurses who took the time to see that my Grandad came through his own battle with cancer successfully.

At the start of the 09/10 football season, I got Sir Bobby Robson’s name printed on the back of my shirt, but I still didn’t feel that this was enough!!

I have therefore decided to take part in the Great North Bike Ride on 29/08/2010 next year and to try to raise £250.00 for The Sir Bobby Robson foundation and the Cancer Ward at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle, that he supported.

I know 55 miles in one day will be hard, and I intend to train and to make sure that I give 110% to make sure I reach my financial target and to make sure that I’m fit and ready to do the bike ride.  I know the challenge will be tough, but I’m prepared to do it for both my Grandad, Sir Bobby Robson and the Dr’s and Nurses of the Northern Centre for Cancer Care at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle.

As Sir Bobby himself once said:

“In life, you can’t succeed and be clever and be bright and be correct and be spot on all the time. Life is more complicated than that, life is more difficult than that.
It’s a tough world out there and if you’re not a tough guy, you won’t survive, not to get to where you want to be…”

Thanks for taking the time to read this page and please donate whatever you can afford.  Every little helps, especially for a fantastic cause such as this one.
