Our family has been impacted by MS for so many years and together we are doing what we can to help the MS Society UK to continue doing the amazing work they do.
We are walking in memory of Karen August, Chris's mum, Kerrys mother-in-law, Harrison & Rubie's grandmother. Kathy, Liam & Connor are taking part in support of Karen's family.
Karen was diagnosed when she was very young, but It quickly became a normal part of life to see her walking with a stick, mainly because it never stopped her from being the person she had always been, doing the things she always had. But Karen's MS was a very severe and progressive form of MS and she soon became wheelchair bound which prevented her from doing some of those things, but not all, she could still have a chat and a laugh.
She continued to deteriorate. She soon lost her ability to write, walk at all, feed herself, speak, swallow, go to the toilet and see clearly. She underwent two intensive brain operations, lost her bladder and later, needing to be fed via tube she eventually became bed-ridden for the last 12 years of her life. Without even realising it we had all become carers for Karen but it never felt anything but normal, it’s what you do as a family.
Sadly Karen passed away on 15th May 2017 after a 26 year fight with MS, leaving our family heartbroken.
MS had dictated the type of relationship Karen was to have with her family & friends we soon realised what it really had taken from us, she was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and friend.
This is one of the many reasaons we have decided to do as much as we can to help raise the much needed awareness and funds the MS Society UK rely on in order to help people like Karen and hopefully one day find a cure.
