*DAY AFTER THE RUN* Despite torrential rain we completed the first lap in good order, with much banter and in a respectable 1 hour and 46 minutes. But Rod the Rocket's pass (1 in 3 gradient) for the second time in one day, took it's toll on our ageing bodies, which proceeded to develop a series of mechanical issues... We stuck at it and made it over the line in 4 hours and 13 minutes, just in time for tea and medals. Thanks for the incredible support... *DAY AFTER THE RUN*
Chris, my nephew, died on Tuesday 13 September from bone cancer diagnosed three years ago when he was just nineteen.
Although indescribably sad, Chris was not one for complaining and simply got on with being poorly for much of this time, never losing his characteristic sense of humour or unfailing manners!
Not surprisingly for someone embarking on a career in sports journalism, Chris had a soft spot for all things athletic, especially boxing. Now I am not about to get knocked out but it so happens I am about to run a marathon in the Lake District with an old friend.
The timing and type of event seem a fitting tribute to Chris, and a perfect opportunity to raise some money in his memory and for a cause that he will appreciate. Amazingly, Chris' Mum, Dad and two younger sisters were able to nurse him at home until he died - a truly good end to his life thanks to their love and determination. They had some help of course, and this is why this page is set up so that all donations go to St Michael's Hospice, in recognition of the wonderful work that their Hospice at Home team undertake for people like Chris and his family.
I need you to help me reach my target - the funding for such exceptional and personalised palliative care comes predominantly from charitable donations. The good news is that 75% of your donation will be spent on frontline services - so that others like Chris can benefit too.
And now for the boring blurb...
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
Go on... and thanks!
