Story
Zoe is a happy and sociable 5-year-old who loves being cuddled and tickled. As she progressed from babyhood her parents became concerned that she was not reaching the normal childhood milestones – such as walking and talking.
Zoe’s physical development was particularly slow – at just over two years old she was not making any attempt to walk – she moved around by shuffling on her bottom. Her parents also noticed that she did not make regular eye contact with adults and were worried that Zoe’s social development was being delayed. When she was two- years- old she was diagnosed with developmental delay and sensory processing disorder.
Zoe’s parents approached bibic for help after hearing about us through the parenting website, mumsnet.
The Conditions
Developmental disorder is a term relating to a child’s inability to reach normal developmental milestones within certain timescales. For example, the expected time period for learning to walk is between 9 and 15 months, a 20- month- old child who was not walking would be considered to have developmental delay in this area. The milestones cover areas such as growth, mobility, speech and language and social skills, such as playing.
Sensory processing disorder involves a child’s ability to interpret and respond to the different senses – sight, sound, touch, taste, smell and movement. It shows itself in various ways – a child may react badly to loud noise, may not like being touched, may only eat certain foods or have difficulty handling stressful situations. Sensory processing disorder can lead to problems with behaviour, emotions, learning and forming relationships – at home and school.
