My dad, Len, has very recently been diagnosed with Pleural Mesothelioma, an incurable form of lung cancer caused directly by asbestos.  The disease forms in the soft tissue around the lungs, once the asbestos is inhaled the fibres hold on to the pleural membrane and infrequently leads to pleural mesothelioma.

My dad is an amazing man and a true hero and role model for me and the rest of my family.  He is loved very much by everyone who knows him and adored by his 5 young grandchildren.  He has worked hard all of his life and is a strong but quiet character.  When he first starting working in the building industry, many moons ago, the risks of asbestos were unknown.  He continued in this trade until his retirement and enjoyed his job so much he still carries on helping out his children, friends and family whenever he can.  He has always lived a full and active life often out cycling, walking, dancing or cruising and never says no to anyone.

As many of you will know I am not the most natural athlete but I decided to run the Sheffield Half Marathon on behalf of the Mesothelioma UK Charity Trust who provide specialist information, support & improved care and treatment for this cancer.  Their services are free of charge and rely totally on donations for financial support.  Fingers crossed I make it over the finish line before the bus picks me up.
