We are setting out on 21st April 2013 to walk the whole length of the South West Coast Path, a distance of 630 miles, starting at Minehead in Somerset and ending at Poole no later than 15th June 2013. If we are successful, by the end of our walk we will have climbed a total height of 114,931 ft, equivalent to almost four times the height of Everest -and had a great time! We will be carrying our own kit, including  tents, and minimal cooking equipment. Family and friends will meet up with us at various points along the way to join in for a bit and support us. We hope to raise a substantial sum for CLIC, which is the wonderful charity that provided such important support to Tom Martin and his family back in 1995.

Tom, the youngest of David’s three sons, was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 1995. Receiving treatment at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, the Martin’s are eternally grateful for the support their family received provided by the CLIC Sargent team based there.

Soon after Tom’s diagnosis, the Martin’s were introduced to their CLIC Sargent Social Worker at the RUH who was able to help them to understand and cope with the emotional, practical and financial effects of cancer, through treatment and beyond. Enormous support was also received from Tom’s CLIC Sargent Nurses, who were able to coordinate his clinical and non-clinical care, to maximise the amount of time he could safely spend at home, and ensured that treatments were able to be given at home where possible.

David said “ As in all walks of life it was the people who made the difference and in this case it was the care, compassion and understanding of the CLIC Sargent staff”

Chris said “I saw how much the support of the CLIC Sargent team meant to Tom and the whole Martin family at a very difficult time. Now it’s time to oil our knees and show our support to CLIC Sargent and the important work they do for children and their families”

Tom endured six months of treatment, and fortunately went into remission receiving the all clear two years following his diagnosis. Now aged 30, Tom has thankfully been well ever since and now works as a film maker based in Bristol. The family are still keen to show their continued support to CLIC Sargent to help other families who are now going through what they went through.
