Hello,

From Sept. 27th September to 3rd October I shall be walking, by myself, the 71 miles along the South West Coast Path from St Ives to the Lizard, in Cornwall.  As you probably know physical exercise is something that I abandoned long ago with my school plimsolls and P.E skirt, so with its steep climbs and rocky paths I am expecting this walk to be a big challenge for me -- although a visit to the Richard Long exhibition has put this into perspective for me!

I am doing this to raise money for the charity 'Trees for Streets' which is aiming to get 1 million new trees onto the streets of London. Its about large, majestic trees where space and architecture allows.

In London many of our trees were planted over 100 years ago, which is a wondeful legacy but an extensive programme of replacement planting is needed to provide the tree-lined streets of the future. Boris has already pledged to plant 10,000 trees in London but according to Trees for Streets if every Londoner donated £3 we could add another 37,000 street trees across the capital in the next three years.

There are tons of good reasons to get more trees on our city streets. I am sure I am preaching to the converted but, as you know, they filter pollution, reduce smog, reduce flooding, shade us from the sun (reducing solar radiation), increase wildlife habitat and most of all make London a nicer, more pleasurable place to be.  Trees help create environments where people feel more relaxed and happier- and this can help reduce vandalism and crime and boost both local economies as well as a help create a sense of community and civic pride.

Where your money will go:

  • £3 will help us with our target of £1 million for more street trees.
  • £10 will pay for the stake and tie to secure the tree for it's first three years
  • £30 will water the tree for the three years
  • £75 will pay for the guard to keep the tree safe while it is growing
  •

Thanks for your support and I'll let you know how the walk goes! I am stiff enough these days at the best of times ;))
