Story

Hello,

My name is Christine Green.

I have always enjoyed cycling, and was given an electric bike for my 70th birthday last year. The "electric bit" helps me get up all the hills around my home near Monmouth, South Wales.....but I still have to do the pedalling!

With this super present I decided that I ought to have an adventure on it, so thought about cycling from my home in Wales to my birthplace in Scotland, and this developed into LEJOG. I have been training for some months, and as word has got around I have been asked if I am doing it for a charity. This was not my original purpose, as I felt that it would be enough for me to look after myself, as I am undertaking the ride on my own, with no back up( companies which give back-up were reluctant to give support for electric bikes)

I also had no knowledge of  how I would go about organising donations etc. My husband`s firm, Green and Co, came to the rescue and have set me up with Just Giving. With their help I am going to ditch my PAYG mobile phone, of which £5 would last me a year! and get a proper mobile with apps to download maps etc.....and then teach me how to use it! This is all very new territory for me....in a computer age I feel that I am still in the age of the quill pen!

I have chosen this charity because the three cancers which it supports are rolled into one,( breast, ovarian and cervical)  under the title of women v cancer. This disease, in any of the above forms, is something that we can all relate to, either personally or through family and friends.  It is one which is impacts on all women, from Lands End to John o Groats.

I am setting off in June, and have planned my route using a mixture of routes from the Sustrans guide on National Cycle Networks and the Cicerone End to End route. I will cycle around 40 miles per day, as  with this mileage I will, hopefully, be able to cope, and to enjoy the adventure.

I  have posted details of my route, and if there are people out there who may like to join in a day of my trip with me, along the way, that would be great!

As I mentioned earlier, it is a new experience for me to be communicating with people, whom I do not know, through the web, but in doing so I hope to get support for this very worthwhile cause. When I am cycling north I shall, every day, think of the women who might wish to be sharing my adventure but are receiving bad news, treatment or are recovering from cancer.

Thank you for reading my story. I hope that you may like to support funds to help overcome cancer.

Sincerely,

Christine.
