Brighton Marathon 2010 · 18 April 2010 ·

The Federation of Disabled People works to promote independence and dignity for all disabled people and to take the fear out of disability. It works to identify gaps when services are being planned and developed and ensure the needs of disabled people are included.

Story

Sunday April 18th is the first ever Brighton Marathon and I’ve put my name down to run!  Why? Firstly, I love running, and what a place to run, along our lovely sea front. Secondly, I’d like to raise some money, (there has to be a method to my madness!)

I’m the Chair of the Brighton & Hove Federation of Disabled People, a user led organisation that promotes independent living for all.  You can find out about us on www.bhfederation.org.uk. We’re opening a community space later this year, primarily for disabled people, in Vernon Gardens, near the Seven Dials, Hove, called ‘Space For Change’.   It will be fully accessible in its environment and its technology and will be used by local disabled people and organisations.  We’re currently raising funds to buy computers, together with hardware and software to make them fully accessible.  We’re also raising funds for fully accessible equipment to make this community space comfortable and welcoming.

I’m choosing to raise money for ‘Space for Change’ not just because I’m a FED volunteer, but also because it’s an important local community initiative and sometimes local smaller stuff can be missed!  If you’d like to sponsor me to support this Project please make your cheque payable to B&H Federation of Disabled People and post to our Freepost address: Brighton & Hove Federation of Disabled People, Freepost SEA 10164, Hove BN3 5PA marked ‘Christine’.  I’m planning to complete the course in not more than 4 and a half hours and my running vest number is 2096.  If you spot me on the day, shout loudly as I’m partially sighted and I probably won’t see you but I’ll hear you cheering me on!

I hope you can support me and this important project.

With many thanks

Christine Laurence
