Although no longer a volunteer for Childline, I want to do more for this service as I believe passionately that by targeting investment in early years and young people, society will hopefully shift more toward prevention rather than the cure for it's difficulties. We're quick to espouse the virtues of living in a modern, connected world, but the extent to which we can truly connect with others on an emotional level is questionable at best, perhaps, in part, because aspects of modern life can so easily remove the 'hassle' of communicating with others on a deeper level. Young people can be particularly vulnerable to today's pressures, which appear to enter consciousness at ever younger ages. They may be vulnerable either because they do not have any trusworthy source of support, or simply through the naivety of youth or poor guidance by peers - An anonymous source of support can do so much for a developing person's sense of direction and self-confidence.

Childline is the best thing I have ever done and I would encourage anyone to volunteer as a counsellor. Fundraising for childline can cover the costs of training new counsellors and finding new mediums through which to reach a growing number of young people. Many calls sadly still remain unanswered and further investment will help make a difference to more young people. Even just being listened to can make a huge difference to a young person's growth, as many young people testify.
