Christopher Wilkinson, John Wilkinson, Malk Thixton and Sam Thixton will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro for Tuberous Sclerosis (TS) Foundation.

Unfortunately, my second eldest brother, Robert, was diagnosed with Tuberous Sclerosis, a potentially life threatening disability at 10 months old. Robert turned the ripe old age of 23 in 7th February 2011 having battled through the significant difficulties that his condition presents and the TS association has been a constant support for both he and my parents over this period through the good times and the bad.

TS affects a person’s ability to develop and enforces regular seizures. Through school at a young age, Robert was unable to establish regular friendships and heavily relied on private teaching in order to create a general ability to complete regulatory subjects such as Maths and English. His condition therefore stunted his education and he remains struggling with basic teaching in compulsory subjects at college at the age of 24. More recently, Roberts’s condition has deteriorated in other fields and he now suffers further with visual impairment and failing kidneys. Both of the above make life a little more difficult for Robert and those that care for him.

Roberts’s condition is worsoned by a Tumour within his brain. The tumour is constantly developing within his brain, and must be removed once it reaches a certain stage of growth. This requires life threatening surgery and weeks of recovery. It is a too frequent set back in any development and influences his confidence, worsening his mental state with regards to his condition.

Robert has, and forever will be a fighter and he continues to battle through all that his condition throws at him without complaint and without fault. He is a stronger person than most and has to cope with set back after set back. His development has meant that he now better establishes his condition overall and seems to realise that he is not recovering, or going to recover, at least not to the state of many reading this. This appears to hamper his will, but never the less he battles on.

TS foundation are a worthy charity that work hard through science and research in order to develop treatment both physical and medical in order to help people with varying degrees of the same condition. They also offer support to the families of those affected to help combat hard ships through day-to-day life, as well as offering specialist support and open clinics that can aid with complications in the condition.

They are a cause worth aiding, and any donations will be instantly recognised and heavily appreciated.

Many thanks!
