Just to let you all know that we both made it to the top Uhuru Peak. It was a definite challenge and extremely hard at times but we did it and thank you to everyone who has made a donation. We visited the orphanage while we were out here and every penny is very well used. Once again THANK YOU....
Amani Children’s Home is dedicated to the protection of Tanzania’s most vulnerable population: street-children and AIDS orphans. It is estimated that there are 2.5 million orphaned children in Tanzania.
Since its founding by Tanzanians in 2001, Amani has rescued hundreds of children from the perils of life on the streets, where they face a high risk of HIV transmission, malnutrition, and abuse.
Amani, which means “peace” in Swahili, provides healthy food, education, counseling and medical care for every child who turns to them for help.
Every Donation Counts
Your money can go a long way in Tanzania. Here are some of the things that the money you raise can buy for the Amani children.
£75 25 textbooks
£150 33 pairs of shoes
£300 60 school uniforms
Ok so what are we going to do to enable all our friends and family to dig deep.
Kilimanjaro stands at 5986 meters above sea level, the tallest free standing mountain in the world. We will start at the base in tropical rain forest, ascend for the next 4 days through moorlands, barren terrain and finally snow and ice towards the summit. We have decided to climb one of the most beautiful routes up bit it is also one of the more difficult routes called the Machame route, or it's nickname is 'The Whiskey Route'. We will be hiking between 6 - 8 hours every day, walking between 15 - 20 k each day. The last night we will start at midnight to climb for approx 7 hours to reach the summit, climbing 1300 metres in darkness, hopefully arriving at Uhuru Peak for sunrise. After a short stop at the top we will descend nearly 2000 metres taking approx 12 hours, after having a well earned beer or two we overnight and arrive back to our hotel the following afternoon. There will be no electricity for 5 nights, so no hair straighteners, hot showers or hot water, camping on the mountain.
Many Thanks in advance for any donations made.
