Water Wipeout · 29 June 2013
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page. Richard and I have decided to embark on a challenge to raise money for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) because our daughter Molly is Type 1 diabetic. Molly is 5 years old and was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 3 1/2 years old.
Type 1 diabetes is caused by the immune system attacking the insulin producing cells of the pancreas meaning the body cannot regulate blood glucose levels on its own.
Type 1 diabetes affects 350,000 people in the UK - over 25,000 of them are children. Incidences of Type 1 is increasing by 5 per cent each year, particulary in children under 5.
As parents we have to manage her condition, this requires a constant balance of exercise and insulin therapy to maintain her blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible.
After diagnosis in September 2011, Molly started on multiple daily injections, however since January 2012 Molly has moved onto an insulin pump. This is worn around her waist and attatched to her body by a cannula, 24 hours a day. Molly is also required to have her blood glucose tested at least 8 times a day.
We have decided to raise money for The JDRF who aim to help children like Molly to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. It is the world's leading charitable funder of Type 1 diabetes research.
We have started training for an event called "Water Wipeout" which involves a 5 or 10k run, open water swimming and a range of obstacles to complete which are set up by the army. We have chosen this event as Molly loves to watch "Total Wipeout" so we thought she would enjoy watching us. We also have 3 other members in our team - David Ayers, Becky Titterton and David Titterton.
If you could kindly donate using "Just Giving" we would be hugely appreciative.
