BUPA Great North Run 2009 · 20 September 2009 ·

Refuge opened the world’s first refuge in West London in 1971. We support thousands of women & children every day, experiencing domestic and sexual violence, female genital mutilation, forced marriage, stalking, trafficking, prostitution & so-called ‘honour’ based violence.

Story

Refuge is a domestic abuse chairty that isn't allocated any spaces in the Great North Run, so when I got a place in the ballot I decided to ask Refuge if I could run on their behalf.  Refuge relies on charitable donations to ensure that their important work can continue.  Domestic abuse is not a cuddly subject; it's difficult to wrap up and sell as a potential charitable birthday present, so as a result the Donkey Sanctuary received more donations last year than all the domestic abuse charities in Britain put together.

Refuge provides a 24 hour helpline to help vunerable women and children that are experiencing domestic violence, providing support and information 365 days a year.  They provide emergency accomodation for women and children when they are most at need.  Refuge helps to raise awareness about a problem that will affect 1 in 4 women in their lifetime.

This charity relies on donations from the public to help fund their work, so any donation, large or small would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks, Claire.
