Group B Strep is the leading cause of severe infection in newborn babies including sepsis, meningitis and pneumonia. Charity Group B Strep Support provides support for families, improves awareness, educates health professionals and campaigns for better prevention. Thanks for fundraising for GBSS.

Story

Group Strep B is the most common cause of life threatening infections in newborn babies in the UK. Without preventative medicine, GBS infects around 700 babies each year, sadly around 75 die and around 40 survivors suffer long term problems as a result.

Two weeks after giving birth Claire was diagnosed with Group Strep B, it was through excellent medical care that they treated us both for it just in case, due to unexplained complications that arose during labour.

The test is a routine part of antenatal care in many countries including Australia, Canada, Spain and the USA. The UK do not offer this test routinely. Until then, raising awareness is the key to saving babies’ lives.
