Story
On Sunday 26th September, I will be participating in a sponsored cycle ride, cycling from Bristol to Bath and then all the way back again... in fancy dress!
It's all in aid of an awesome little charity called the Kenya Children's Trust. Please read on to find out more on them and their goals:
In 2007 a group of elders from the African Healing Church, reacting to the numbers of abandoned and neglected children living in Nairobi’s slums, took it upon themselves to attempt to alleviate the desperation and despair felt by the community, to help break the cycle of poverty and to give these children a chance in life. Despite most of the congregation living on less than $1 per day they were able to gather together the money needed to rent a building, pay for a teacher and to buy food and clothes for the children. Amazingly, this group set up a small nursery school to provide a safe haven and basic education for up to 60 children living in the slum area known as Gataka.
Over the following 2 years the group did a fantastic job of supporting these children – however, last year the money ran out and the teacher and children were evicted! The Kenya Children’s Trust was set up in 2009 to support this group, to continue the schooling and to prevent these children from returning to a life on the streets. The Kenya Children’s Trust plans to provide bursaries for the children to go on to primary school and to establish community projects to help cover the costs of running and expanding the school in the future. The trust is currently renting a room for the schools operation and has employed two teachers and a teaching assistant for the 40 children still attending. As well as receiving an education these children receive breakfast and one hot meal each day as well as several pieces of fruit each week. The first step has been to purchase the land where the school will be built; through this sponsored event we hope to raise the monies needed to build the new school and provide the materials for the children to begin their education there.
With your help we can get the next stage in the process up and running and to continue giving the children the love, support and education they so desperately deserve.
