Story
HY EVERYONE,
I have recently been accepted to take part in a unique and challenging experience. I have been chosen as a participant on International Citizen Service. International Citizen Service (ICS) is an opportunity for volunteers, like me, to help some of the poorest people in the world and learn valuable new skills at the same time. It’s a programme that brings young people from different countries together to fight poverty. In many poorer countries young people make up the majority of the population. This programme is specifically designed to get young people from the UK and my host country(Zambia) together to tackle poverty and its causes. As young people, we are the best placed to do this and change the world for the future.
I have been selected to go to ZAMBIA with Restless Development which is an agency part of ICS for three months starting in June 2013. During this time I will be living with a local family and will be involved in a community work project along with a counterpart from Zambia. Restless Development was founded in 1985 by Jim Cogan the Deputy Head of Westminster School therefore it has been active over the past 27 years and over 7 million received help. Too many young people do not have access to services, education and support that they need. But young people can fill these gaps. Restless Development professionally trains &supports young people to spread knowledge and address propriety issues in the specific communities and countries. This programme aims to provide structured long-term interventions for 1,100,000 youth improving their civic participation, livelihoods and sexual health There are 16,000 Restless Alumni worldwide working towards achieving these goals. I really want to be one of the alumni.
This programme is funded by the government but there is a limited amount of money available therefore as part of my commitment to the programme I have pledged to raise £800. This will enable me to travel to ZAMBIA and help young people for three months in the main two problems their community is facing: LIVELIHOODS AND EMPLOYMENT and SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH. On the UN s Human Development Index Zambia remains one of the least developed countries in the world, ranked 150 out of 169 countries in 2010.
I am undertaking a variety of fundraising activities that I will advertise every day in order to reach this goal . If you would like to make a donation towards my fundraising efforts for this project I would be very grateful. I will make sure your contribution will be heard and thanked.
