My name is Dez Gulliford,I will be taking part in two legs of the clipper round the world yacht race 2011-12, i will be  onboard one of 10 identical yachts setting off California and stopping off at ,Panama,New york,Nova Scotia,Ireland,Northen Europe and back to the UK having traveled half way around the globe, arriving back in july 2012.

The 10 indentical 68' yachts have been designed specifically for the race,and are definitley desgined for speed rather than comfort.. Each yacht is sponsored by an international city or region..

So'what qualifies me to take part in this race??Well not alot to be honest.The clipper race is the only round the world yacht race set up for Non-proffesional sailors-like myself. Each yacht has a proffesional skipper but for the rest there is no pre-requisites as regards sailing experience. 40% of crewmambers in the last race had never sailed before they started thier race training..

I having sailed for many years in pwllheli and around the Lleyn peninsula having starting in a optimist then with a few short races in yachts half the size i will be racing.

Some crew will be taking on individual legs of the race(it's divided into 8 legs) with just under 100 crew taking on full circumnavigation. That brings me to my next qualification - a certain level of  insanity..Whilst onboard the 68'  for 6 months at sea i will be sharing with 17 reletive strangers! The preparations will get more intense as the race day gets closer, I feel incredibly privilaged to be given  this opportunity and i really intend on making the most of it...

My target is £22,800

I'm sure that many of you will know someone who has and are being effected by cancer, My chosen charity have regional support offices,they also support research into the cures, causes and managment of cancer.
