Rosie May Storrie was murdered at a friend's Christmas party in December 2003, when she was just 10 years old. The following Christmas, the family went on holiday to escape the horrific recollections of the previous year. To compound their misfortune, the Tsunami struck and, lucky to survive, they were evacuated from the Maldives to Sri Lanka where they witnessed the death and devastation caused by the disaster which left over 1000 children orphaned on the island. The orphans were scattered all over Sri Lanka and brothers and sisters separated and placed in institutionalised care. These children became vulnerable to abuse, violence, trafficking and exploitation. The plight of these children gave the family a positive focus and the inspiration to set up the Rosie May Home, an exciting and unique concept where sisters are reunited and live together as a family unit.
The ethos of the Home is to create a loving family home where each child is recognised and nurtured as an individual and to give them back their childhood and re-integrate them into the community. It relies solely on contributions from the public and, with no administration costs, every penny donated goes towards maintaining and improving the buildings and facilities. However, much of this maintenance work and that of teaching the children is done by volunteers and Geraldine and I intend to go out to the orphanage in November, Geraldine to work with the children and me to help with new projects and to do whatever maintenance work is necessary.
To demonstrate our commitment to the Home, in addition to working out there for 4 weeks, we are trying to collect as much as we can before we depart, all of which will go to the Rosie May Memorial Foundation. We will be paying all our own travel, food and accommodation costs from our own pockets. Hence we have set up this page in the hope that we can ask for your support for this very worthwhile cause, the full details of which can be found on the Rosie May website as follows:
