RideLondon-Surrey 100 2013 · 4 August 2013 ·

Whizz Kidz provides young wheelchair users with the equipment and skills they need to live life as independently as possible, at home, at school, at work and beyond.

Story

I'm doing the RideLondon 100 mile bike ride on 4th August 2013 for WhizzKidz, a fantastic charity that is all about giving disabled children the chance to lead more independent lives.

Last year, weary of friends pointing out the many similarities between me and Bradley Wiggins (skinny, crap haircut, likes sitting down, definitely not going to win the Tour de France in 2013) I thought I may as well just complete the transformation and start wearing lycra clothing on a regular basis. I have now become a complete cycling bore, constantly chuntering on about cycling, regularly using words like 'cadence' and 'chainset', and with enough bikes in my flat for me and my two cats to have one each.

BUT - I am now going to put my newfound lack of personality to GOOD USE by raising money to take part in the new 'RideLondon' 100 mile ride thing that Boris Johnson has started (yes, I know he's a complete tool, but this is actually a good idea). Think of it as the London Marathon of bike rides, with 25,000 people desperately ringing their bells at each other to get them out of their way...

Anyone who has known me for any length of time will doubtless have a puzzled expression on their faces now, trying and failing to get their brains to accept any link between the words 'PETE' and 'EXERCISE'. But I assure you that I really am intending to cycle 100 miles in one go, without stopping (much). I've been training and everything.

I'm doing it for Whizz-Kidz because they are a brilliant charity who I know do important work in helping young people living with a disability lead more independent lives, through advice, support, and mobility equipment including wheelchairs. I know several people whose families have been supported by them, I've seen their work first hand when I was Lambeth's Cabinet member for Children and Young People, and my mate Sally works for them too (hi Sally! You'll donate more now you've got a shout out, right?).

Please consider sponsoring me - any amount is gratefully received (but £20 means I'll buy you a dirnk next time I see you...).

Thanks! Pete x
