Story

On 27th April 2014 I will be taking part as one of the support crew in HandBikes@Dawn '14: a ridge too far. After the success of the hand bikers scaling Cadair Idris last year, I will be accompanying five disabled riders who will set out this year to conquer the equally arduous 'Pont Scethin' loop, a classic mountain bike route in Southern Snowdonia.

The journey follows the old winter and summer pack-horse routes between the ancient towns of Dolgellau and Harlech, making use of the section where the tracks cross the ridge-line that shadows the coast. The riders will have to summit this ridge twice to complete the journey. Will it be a ridge too far?

Using specially designed mountain bikes which are pedalled by hand rather than by foot, the riders will seek to make a circuit of the16 km route; a task that will take them about 8 hours to complete.

The hand-bikes have especially low gears which will be essential to tackle the 750m of climbing on the steep and rocky upper slopes of the ridge.

The ride is being put together by 'Challenge your Boundaries' an adaptive MTB project based at the Coed y Brenin Trail Centre near Dolgellau.

"So many people got so much out of last year's event that it was irresistible not to do another one" said Graham O’Hanlon, who is coordinating the ride.

The aim of the challenge is to raise the profile of adaptive mountain biking within the UK and to raise funds for a number of associated projects and local charities.
