Story
To date I have walked 9,000 miles to help hospices: walking from John o' Groats to Land's End in 1988 and 2007, from New York to San Francisco in 1988 to 1989 and from New York to North Dakota in 2009. I have written a book about the walk in 1988, called Beyond the Setting Sun. Five pounds from each book sold will go to local hospices.
In October of 2011 I will set off once more to walk from North Dakota, through the Rocky Mountains, to the Grand Canyon, through Death Valley and snowshoe over the Sierras to reach San Francisco. On the journey I will be visiting hospices and encouraging people to support their local hospice. I am carrying out the walk in memory of my Mum, Monica Pickford, who died from cancer at the age of 59, in 2003.
Information about the walk can be found at http://www.freewebs.com/drskinnersite
Hospices give support to people with life-threatening illnesses. Specially trained doctors and nurses can help relieve the pain that patients are in. Hospice counsellors can talk to patients or relatives to help them through the difficulties they may be facing. Many other services are offered by hospices, which aim to bring dignity and compassionate care to people who are suffering from life-threatening illnesses.
In East Kent, which is my local area, I am raising money for Pilgrims Hospices.
