Story
I made this page in memory of Taft Snowdon, my step-father, who died on 26th of November 2011 in his room at the Muthaiga Country Club, Nairobi, Kenya. He was doing what he loved, visiting a country with which he had a deep affinity. He was a big man with a big heart, and I regret when thinking about the endless times that he was there for me, that when the time came that he found himself in need neither I nor anyone else was there to help. I do yet find solace that he was in a place that he loved, doing what he loved to do.
Thank you for taking the time to come to the Cornelius Beaumont page to give money to the Save The Elephants fund. Elephants happen to feature on both the company and my own family crest. They are both fascinatingly ancient and intelligent animals, and also the most visible face of African flora and fauna. During my childhood I had the privilege of seeing them everywhere. However, that wealth has already be almost entirely spent, and the incredible world that I knew will not be available to the next generation.
Save the Elephants is not just centred on Kenya where the founders, the Douglas-Hamiltons, still live today. The charity funds anti-poaching and other efforts all across Africa. This is important because elephants today are realistically restricted to a few game parks and reserves, but they are animals that require a huge amount of space. There are too many elephants in handful famous parks, but most game parks are unsafe for them, so repopulating these parks would only mean sending them to certain slaughter. These beautiful animals once had dozens of variants, sizes and distributions and we have evidence of what we believe is only a sliver of their former diversity. Effective protection of these reserves will ensure that the few remaining elephants, along with the cornucopia of life that lives with them, our inheritance, can be passed on to our own children.
Although this is a responsibility that rightfully falls upon us all, most of us experience few opportunities to express this in action - even if we do recognise the importance of it.
I invite you to give whatever you feel able to Save the Elephants. For more information: http:www/savetheelephants.com
