In Memory of Steve Greenhaff, My Best Friend

In August 2006 I had the honour of being a Best Man at the wedding of my best friend Steve to the lovely Rebecca. The following year I was thrilled to be asked to be a god parent to their newborn baby son Henry.

In the Spring of 2009 I was a pall bearer at Steve's funeral. 

I had spent months watching my best mate suffer from the effects of a devastating brain tumour discovered by chance after he had suffered a number of seizures.

As the months had went by I had watched as Steve had battled on through confusion and pain, eventually ending up bed ridden before succumbing to the side effects of the tumour and passing away on St. Patricks Day.

This date was particularly ironic as Steve had always loved a good time and had fully embraced the St.Patrick's Day celebrations when we were at college.

He was always great fun to be with. Never having a bad word to say about anyone and being able to make friends at the drop of a hat.

Steve and I could talk 'till the cows came home about any number of surreal subjects and we were on exactly the same wave length. As such seeing him rendered so confused and unable to hold a conversation was all the more tragic.

During Steve's illness I was struck by the lack of adequate care and the lack of knowledge from medical staff as to how best he could be treated. As I researched Brain Tumours I discovered just how bleak the diagnosis is for sufferers and how underfunded reaearch into this particular form of cancer is.

So when I found out about the charity Brain Tumour UK I vowed to do what I could to help highlight the good work they do and perhaps ensure that in future Brain Tumour sufferers and their families would receive the care and support they require.

                                                                  

                                                                     Our Three Peaks Challenge

 

One thing Steve and I did NOT have in common was the love of outdoor pursuits. Steve loved the great outdoors whereas I much preferred bacon sarnies and my bed. It seems fitting therefore that I undertake a physical challenge in memory of Steve.

He would be greatly amused to think of me trudging up the three highest peaks in Britain, braving the elements with none of the home comforts I love so much.

It was for these reasons that my work colleagues managed to persuade me to do the challenge, together as a team we hope to raise a fitting amount for the charity so as to do Steve proud.

Because some of our team are Three Peaks veterans we do not have to spend any money on guides, our transportation is provided by our work place so again this is a cost we do not need to meet. As such, every penny pledged goes to Brain Tumour UK.
