Story
After falling in love with the Lake District back in 2010, I became aware of the Brathay Trust and the Brathay 10in10 - 10 official marathons over 10 consecutive days, all on the same gruelling course.
One marathon is enough for anyone, what a ludicrous thing to even consider let alone attempt - right?
Well in 2013 I was lucky enough to have been selected to take part. I can honestly say, it was the most physically and emotionally challenging 10 days of my life - a real genuine life changing experience, and whilst my 10 day didn't turn out as I expected (due to injury), I got the job done - vowing never again.
Famous last words and in 2015 I returned to put the demons to rest, and that was that.
Spin forwards 4 years and the Brathay bubble called me back and was inspired to attempt just one more time. But unfortunately, life & family commitments meant that I had to put my return on Brathay on hold for a year.
HOWEVER ... I'm absolutely thrilled & delighted to say, in the words of Arnie ... I'll be back ... in 2020, for the third installment of the Brathay 10in10, along with a collection of amazing athletes.
For me, the journey won't be straight forward or easy, as I'll be picking up my training from a standing start. The body is starting to remember what running is and how it feels. But be under no illusions that this is going to be easy, far from it!! Twice completion doesn't guarantee third time success so I have to be smart - listen to my body and get into the best shape of my life.
The first time around in 2013 was ignorance, not knowing what the heck I was letting myself in for, and OMG the pain was something else! The second time in 2015 was about payback, to banish the demons, and I did that in spades, job done. This third time, well, it's all about proving that a big lad from Leicestershire still has the physical and mental fortitude to complete such a monumental challenge, but importantly, to help contribute to the amazing work of Brathay.
I consider myself exceptionally privileged to have been selected once again, and in my personal life generally - but there are those who aren't, and that's where Brathay comes in.
Brathay's charitable work is underpinned by enterprising fundraising and our supporters’ commitment. We know that, enthused by the belief in the transformational power of people working together, you can help us make a positive difference. Work with us to transform the lives of young people. There are so many ways to help and discover the Brathay effect that is at the heart of everything we do.
