Story

Ten Miles. One Man. One Robot.

On October 25th, 2009, I will finally be leaving the cake shop and going for a run. The Bupa Great South Run. All 10 miles of it.

The event will be televised, and you are all welcome to watch and laugh heartily at my attempt. However, I am not just participating for entertainment purposes. I would like to raise some money for charity too. After months of thought and research, I have finally settled upon a very good cause.

I would like to buy a Robot. But not just any Robot...

The da Vinci Robot

The Royal Surrey County Hospital has launched an appeal to buy a da Vinci Robot. The da Vinci Robot is the most technologically advanced surgical robotic system in the world. Da Vinci allows precision that is not available in standard minimally access surgery.  It dramatically enhances precision and control ensuring that vital details, such as the delicate nerves and blood vessels surrounding the surgical site, are easily identified. This increased accuracy results in faster recovery and shorter hospital stays for patients.

Using the da Vinci Robot for keyhole surgery has a number of benefits for patients, some of which are:

  • less risk of infection.
  • less trauma
  • less pain following the operation
  • less anaesthesia
  • less blood loss
  • meticulous precision
  • all leading to a quicker return to normal daily activities.

I chose this cause because many people close to me have been affected by cancer, and were successfully treated by The Royal Surrey County Hospital. This enhanced technology will ensure a better future for many others.
