Ollie was diagnosed with Crohn's disease at the age of 13, he became very ill and plummeted to 6 stone. Ollie was 18 last week and in the last 5 years has had every drug treatment plus surgery to remove part of his colon, nothing has worked. He has battled through and is truly our hero, unfortunately he has had to defer his last year in school due to being so ill. He is still unwell and is likely to need more surgery in the next month. I have been following Professor Hermon-Taylor for some time now and he is our 'hope'. There is little publicity on this horrendous disease, it's impact on the sufferer and their families. I am sure that all of you know someone with this disease.
Crohn’s Disease is a debilitating and aggressive form of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. It affects around 5 million people worldwide and numbers are increasing, especially in children. Professor John Hermon-Taylor (King’s College London) is an expert in Crohn’s Disease who has been researching its cause for over thirty years. He strongly believes that Crohn’s Disease is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium Avium subspecies Paratuberculosis (MAP) – a distant cousin of Tuberculosis. Professor Hermon-Taylor has invented a new clinical test and a modern therapeutic vaccine against MAP for which he believes holds the best hope of a cure for Crohn’s that there has ever been. The vaccine is currently sitting in a freezer in a research institute, awaiting the funding to take it from the lab to the clinic.
The work of professor Hermon-Taylor has given us a lot of hope. That’s why we have joined a group of volunteers who want to raise funds for the quick completion of this promising research.
Please give anything that you can to help us, no amount is too small. Ollie deserves to live his life free of this disease, I know he is my son, but he is one of the nicest people I know.
