For the last few months I have been thinking about and planning my trip from Lands End to John O'Groats. Everything has slowly come together, the kit, the route, the finance, but up until recently I was unsure if I should do it for charity and if so, which one?
I got several letters in a fund raising pack written by some very notable names; Dr Lee Durrell, Stephen Fry and Sir David Attenborough amongst others, highlighting the need for fund raising for the Cross River Gorilla in Cameroon. Up until recently it was believed that these gorillas were a population of the Mountain Gorillas of Uganda and Rwanda (brought into the public eye by Dian Fossey) however they have been confirmed as being a seperate sub species with fewer than 300 individuals in the wild.
The FFI (Fauna & Flora International) are raising money to establish a gorilla sanctuary in the highlands of Cameroon, which will afford the gorillas vital protection. Unfortunately the area they occupy lies within 20km from the frontline of a logging path. The deforestation has temporarily been halted whilst the FFI are allowed to establish the sanctuary, but unless they can raise the remaining funds soon, the logging will most likely resume.
It is true that there is no such thing as too small an amount to give. Whatever you donate will help protect a unique creature, that has taken an incredibly long time to evolve, from dieing out in our lifetimes.
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving Page,
Alex.
