The Cause

Alzheimer's is one of the most common forms of dementia and is caused by nerve cells dying in certain areas of the brain and the deterioration of millions of connections between affected nerve cells. The loss of connections in the part of the brain dealing with memory usually causes the first symptoms. The disease progresses and spreads, gradually affecting cells in other parts of the brain. More research is needed to find out what causes the nerve cells to die.

For those diagnosed with Alzheimer's the final years have been described as "a long bad dream" by Terry Pratchett. The desease is devastating to many lives that often extends far beyond those diagnosed. Those with the desease live out there last days in a state of confusion often unable to remember any of those around them.

For those family and friends the impact of supporting a relative can be intensely difficult to deal with. In many case family have to personally provide care for a relative with Alzheimer's whilst having to deal with the emotional trauma watching the desease slowly take over.

25 million people, or 42% of the UK population, are affected by dementia through knowing a close friend or family member with the condition.

Just 2.5% of the government's medical research budget is spent on dementia research, while a quarter is spent on cancer research.

1 in 3 over 65s will die with some form of dementia.
