Story
Teresina, Brazil
Our work in Teresina will use sporting activities to promote gender equality and encourage young people to challenge social norms.
Gender inequality causes wage inequality, child marriage, child pregnancy, unequal distribution of chores, and domestic violence. Brazil holds the 4th highest absolute number of child marriages world-wide – in parts of Teresina, 3/10 girls aged 14-19 become pregnant. In parts of Brazil, 3/5 females have experienced violent relationships.
A lack of power caused by gender inequality prevents girls and young women from realising their rights and escaping cycles of poverty. We can change that.
