Story
'Pizza & Research' events have been highly successful in gathering postgraduate students from all walks of life to hear and see some of the fascinating research carried out in DCU. Researchers present their work to a general audience in a friendly environment, allowing for engaging discussion between the presenter and audience.
As this month is Cancer Research month, we would like to bring some of DCU's top cancer researchers to present the latest developments in their studies. Whilst raising donations and awareness on various cancer issues.
Speakers include:
- Stephen Lyons who is a second year PhD student, researching methods for early non-invasive screening of Melanoma using magnetic nanoparticles by locating specific biomarkers.
- Fiona Skelly is a second-year PhD student, she is researching the effectiveness on physical, clinical and psychosocial outcomes from DCU’s MedEX programme. MedEx is a community-based chronic illness rehabilitation programme located in Dublin City University.
- Claire O’Connell, a PhD researcher at the Biomedical Diagnostics Institute in DCU, is developing an early detection test for cancer metastasis. She uses a fluorescent dye encased in glass nanoparticles which differentiate the cancer cells from the normal healthy cells. This technology could improve cancer therapy and save lives by detecting cancer cells in patients’ blood before spreading to other organs.
