Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am running this event to raise money for The Sick Childrens Trust. This charity was there for Michelle and I when our son Jack was admitted to Addenbrookes Intensive Care unit, when he was 2 days old.

When Jack was born everything seemed perfectly normal until we spent our first day with him at home. Something didn't feel quite right, he didn't seem to have any energy.

We returned to hospital with Jack on the Tuesday evening when he was 2 days old. We were expecting to be told that he was perfectly healthy and we were just paranoid parents. However, the paediatric doctor was worried about an abnormal blood result and checked his pulses in his legs and found that they were almost impossible to detect.

After having an X ray of Jack's heart, we were admitted to a ward where we discovered that the doctors suspected Jack had a condition called 'Coarctation of the Aorta', a severe narrowing in the major artery leaving the heart.

Jack was immediately given a drug to keep a duct in his heart open. In the next couple of days Jack was constantly monitored in Intensive Care, having regular ultrasounds of his heart.

During this time it was paramount for us to be close to Jack. The Sick Childrens Trust helped us enormously by providing us with a room in a house within the hospital grounds where we could get some rest knowing we were only metres away from Jack. There was even a direct line from our room to Jacks ward.

On the Thursday Jack was taken to Great Ormond Street Hospital where his condition was confirmed and we were told that he would need an operation. On Easter Sunday, Jack underwent a successful heart operation and we returned home on the following Thursday.

Jack is now thriving, and apart from a large scar around his body, you would never know what he has been through.

I appreciate that for some people 10K isn't a significant distance. But for me this run is a challenge.

We appreciate what The Sick Childrens Trust did for us and would now like to raise money for them to carry on helping other families in similar situations.
