Story

Updated on May 20th 2012 at 3:43 PM from the JustGiving API

Stage 13, Leg 4 completed. Amazing experience. 26.25 miles in 04:35:02, really pleased. Total distance 26.82 miles, mostly in pitch black. Wicked fun. Thanks to my running buddy, David - you rock, dude :-)

The RelayGB story:  This is a unique challenge that will aim to run a relay of 119 non-stop back-to-back marathons around Great Britain in May 2012. Not only will there be the physical challenge to runners of all abilities, the event will also raise funds and awareness for brain tumour research. It is surprising how many of us have been touched by this disease, either directly or through someone we know.

This is a challenge but not a race. Therefore, runners will be running on their own or in small groups, at night or during the heat of the day. All the while, the runner will be notching up the miles that will try to break the current world record for distance relay running which currently stands at 1,923 miles set by the ‘Gillette Phenomenal Tour’ in Romania in 2009 over the course of 13 days. The RelayGB record attempt will aim to smash the current record by covering 2632 miles in 22 days around the British coastline, taking in some of the key sights and cities on the way, whilist rasing a total of over £500,000 in dedicated funds for Brain Tumour UK. Pretty killer deal, huh?  :-)

On a personal note, whilst I'll be doing this to help set a new world record and raise crucial funds for Brain Tumour UK - which is a brilliant reason in itself - I'll be running for my father-in-law, Brian, who sadly passed away in March last year after losing his long fight with brain cancer. His determination and courage were inspirational and we all miss him so very much, but every time I run, I run with him.

The impact on our family and friends highlights how important support and research are. As I tell people constantly, brain cancer is one of the most underfunded in the UK, per capita. Help is in drastic need. By smashing my target for this fundraiser, we could help get closer to the £500,000 target total for the RelayGB event, which will be allocated to the Brain Tumour UK Neuro-Oncology Research Centre at the University of Wolverhampton, which carries out world-class research at the cutting-edge to help better understand, treat and BEAT brain tumours.  Personally, as a scientist, that's a big deal to me and research doesn't come cheap, so please give all you can to this investment in the future ability of oncology and neuroscience.

What am I going to do?  As many of you know, I ran my first marathon last November around Rutland Water, and I said I'd most likely never do another one again.  Yeah, right.  I'm pretty hooked on this thing, so when I was asked to take part in this I said yes straight away.  I'm always up for a challenge, especially to help our favourite charity.  They rock.

My personal contribution to this ambitious target is to run 26.2 miles in Stage 13 / Leg 4, which covers Moulton Sea End to Kings Lynn in the lovely county of Norfolk.  This leg starts around 20:30 on May 19 and runs into the night and will see the completion of 2397 miles in total.  Head torches at the ready and go to it!!  :-)

As with the headshave and marathon I did over the last few years, I will apply for my place of work to contribute after the event, as long as we get over £400.

Please check out www.relaygb.org for more details....

This is the cue to give me all your cash, please :-)  Don't forget to Gift Aid - it makes a massive difference and every penny counts.  Please forward to anyone who may be interested.  Cash donations to me or immediate family will be added to this page.  Let's smash this target, which gets us all closer to the £500,000 total for this hopefully record-breaking event.  Your support is very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Dan
