Story
If I said YOU could change the world, you'd probably just scoff and think I was on another planet...
Well you can!! I'm not talking about ending 3rd world poverty, sending every child in the world to school or getting every homeless person off the streets, don't get me wrong I hope one day we make those things happen but I'm talking about your world, the one with your friends and family and the people you meet everyday these are the people who's world you can change.
A single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a generation. A single drop in the ocean creates a ripple; Many drops create a wave.
You never truly know the impact you have on people and how far that impact reaches and I think that's pretty powerful stuff...
But back on topic, I'm cycling from South Shields to Carlisle along Hadrian’s wall to raise some money for Emmaus, a charity who do something pretty awesome, they give people the opportunity to rebuild their lives. That word 'opportunity' is often one we take for granted.
"Emmaus Communities offer homeless people a home, work and the chance to rebuild their lives in a supportive environment. There are currently 24 Communities around the UK and several more in development."
Emmaus gives back that self respect that is lost when on the streets by providing a roof, food and most importantly work! Emmaus communities aim to be financially self sufficient meaning they are sustainable and will be able to continue to provide support and shelter.
I know there are people who see the homeless as "a drain on society", "drunks and druggies", "there through their own fault", "weak minded"...
Until you've suffered to the point that your only remedy is to find whatever you can to take that pain away..be that alcohol or drugs I don't think you can really comment...
If you have suffered and come through the other side without turning to these, genuinely my hat goes off to you but just remember that not everybody is that strong :-)
Addiction is an illness don't forget, regardless of how you get there.
You can genuinely change some lives by donating to this great charity - so please dig deep.
Plus at the end of it I'll hopefully have thighs like Sir Chris Hoy.. not like Wiggo :-)
