Cotswold Way Challenge 2019 · 29 June 2019 to 30 June 2019 ·

The AT Society is a small, national charity that supports children, young adults and their families whose lives have been shattered by a diagnosis of ataxia telangiectasia (AT), a rare, degenerative, life-limiting condition for which there is no cure. We fund vital research and essential support.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.  About 6 months ago a certain colleague in the team discovered our next big challenge, in a moment of madness I signed up and here we are...the big day is ever approaching along with the fear of my own personal limitations!  In short we will wake up in Bath on Saturday morning and start walking back to Cheltenham a distance of 100km and climb of 2590m, we'll have the odd rest stop but wont sleep on Saturday so we should hopefully rock up in Cheltenham some time in the middle of Sunday!  For my friends around the country its about the same as deciding to walk in one go from Mevagissey to Newton Abbott or from Watford to Brighton seafront. So it's a bit of a big one!

It will certainly be the biggest personal challenge I've ever undertaken so I do hope my friends, family and colleagues will donate generously.  I've chosen to raise vital funds for AT Society, a charity I have the pleasure of working with and that is very close to my heart.  The team at AT are an inspiring bunch of lovely people that I hope I can help in as big a way as possible.  I've written a little about the condition and the tremendous work the charity undertakes.

A-T is a genetic neurodegenerative condition, which causes increasingly severe disability and premature death.  Children are born apparently healthy but from around two years old their balance and coordination deteriorate and they are often described as ‘wobbly’ or ‘clumsy’. Most children with A-T use a wheelchair regularly by the age of 10 and within a few years need full-time care. Children will often have problems reading and speaking but their minds are unaffected. The condition also affects the immune system, leading to frequent chest and lung infections and a high risk of leukaemia and other cancers. Currently there is no cure and children with A-T are unlikely to live beyond their mid 20s

The A-T Society is a small charity with limited means which benefits greatly from the work of volunteers and the support of medical professionals.  While our aim is to support people in the UK, many people from other countries make use of our information and resources. Nearly all our income is from voluntary donations and we do everything we can to get the very best value out of every pound we raise.

Please donate anything you can and I will make sure I get to the finish line in whatever state of mind and body that is!
