Cambodia Community Challenge 2018 · 6 October 2018

We're raising funds to help older and younger people gain confidence in the future, whatever challenges they face today.

Story

I have been incredibly fortunate enough to be selected to
take part in this year’s Santander Charity Challenge, which is to raise £2,000 for the Santander Charity partners Age UK and Barnardo’s
.

If I can fundraise this amount, I’ll then have an
opportunity to go to Cambodia in October with 39 other Santander colleagues, to help build five classrooms for a school in the Knapor community, near the region of Siem Reap.

Santander will also match this amount – meaning a total of £4,000 will be donated to Age UK and Barnardo’s.

My Motivation

Age UK helped my Grandma with social support and also
adapting her home to help with her health needs before she passed away. Our family really appreciated the help and support that Age UK provided and raising money for them is obviously a fantastic way to repay that help.

As for Barnardo’s – I have an 8 year old son, and to imagine
children his age and younger living in poverty or having to deal with any kind of abuse is horrific, so again this would be a great opportunity for me to raise money and contribute towards the help and services that they provide.

The classroom building project will make a huge difference
too – Cambodia is one of the poorest countries in Southeast Asia, with limited education in rural areas and a rapidly growing population. This is leading to overcrowding in classrooms and stretching resources within schools. By helping build these classrooms the team will not only be helping its current 432 students, but ensuring the school is well equipped as the numbers rise to almost 600 in the next 5 years.

The Challenge

Most of the people I’ve spoken to about this challenge
always ask me if I’m nervous or worried about going to Cambodia – as it will be a week of tough, physically demanding, back-breaking work.

However to be completely honest… I’m more concerned about
raising the £2,000, which I’m well aware is a massive amount to try and raise.

All the money raised will go to Age UK and Barnardo’s, and every single penny counts towards helping these two great charities, who help transform the lives of older and younger
people across the UK and share the belief that no-one should have to go through life alone, no matter what their age.

Any donations, no matter how big or small, will help me achieve my target and give me the motivation needed to complete this challenge.

Thank you

:-)
