Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit my Just Giving profile :)

On March 15th, 2012, I will embark on a 15 day trek to climb Mt. Everest Base Camp. I am doing this charity trek to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. I want to GIVE back to research that helped my brother gain a few more years in his life--ultimately giving my family and I some great MEMORIES of him.

On Christmas eve, 1997, I remember answering the phone from Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane (Australia). They asked to speak to my mum, and seconds later my family and I found out the hospital had a heart donor for my 15 year old brother Matthew. We were preparing for a big Christmas that year as it was looking like it was going to be his last due to his heart condition called Cardiomyopathy. We all stayed at the hospital on Christmas eve, and I can remember waking up on Chritsmas day to find out my brother got the best PRESENT of all, a new heart...a new LIFE. My family and I are forever grateful to everyone involved in giving Matthew the opportunity to be with us that little bit longer. To our devastation, he was diagnosed with cancer 5 years after his heart transplant surgery. Unfortunately, he was one of the 20% of heart recipients that develop at least one cancer after immunosuppressive therapy (medication). The cancer made it hard for his new heart to properly function, and sadly we lost Matthew to heart failure at the age of 20.

Heart disease is an ever increasing problem in western societies and it will likely touch you at some point in your life. Whether it's a family member, relative, or friend, unfortunately the odds are you will experience someone with heart problems at some point. By supporting me you will be enabling the vision of the British Heart Foundation to be realized. Their vision "is a world where people dont die prematurely from heart disease". They achieve this by "pioneering research, vital prevention activity and ensuring quality care and support for everyone living with heart disease". This will Help poeple WORLDWIDE and not just here in the UK.

Matthew was truly a FEARLESS person. Despite the constant adversity he experienced, he lived his life to the fullest showing no fear. He has been my inspiration to follow my dreams and be the person I want to be. I think this trek is a fitting challenge to take on as it's something he would've enjoyed doing. Although I think he would've been more likely to climb to the summit and not just base camp! But considering I've never done such a trek, I think baby steps are needed. Maybe this will give me a taste for a future summit attempt...

I hope this story has MOTIVATED you to help me raise £5,000 for the British Heart Foundation to complete my charitable trek to Mt. Everest Base Camp. Any donation from any currency will help me greatly towards achieving this.

Individual Sponsorship:

- £1 or $1....it all counts!
