Mary’s Meals is a global movement that sets up school feeding programmes in communities where poverty and hunger prevent children from gaining an education. The charity now feeds more than 2.6 million children every school day and it costs just £19.15/€22.00 to feed a child for a year.

Story

Op de Beeck & Worth have always been involved in supporting charitable projects, and when Danni & his son Tom decided to cycle the 800Kms from Roncesvalles to Santiago, they decided that it would provide a wonderful opportunity to raise funds for a charity.

Through Tom’s contacts at his school, Ampleforth College, the possibility of raising funds for a specific project of Mary’s Meals presented itself. Back in July 2013 the Ampleforth College Charity, Face Faw funded the kitchen at Chigwaja Primary School in Malawi, and now, Danni and Tom are aiming to raise sufficient funds to be able to use these facilities and provide food to feed the 952 children for the forthcoming year.

The school has 495 boys and 457 girls, with 4 permanent classrooms. There are 14 teachers, and the daily meal provided by Mary’s Meals allow children to attend school every day rather than work or scavenge for food.

In 2013, the global average cost for Mary’s Meals to feed a child for a whole school year is £ 10.70.

We believe that this will address two problems, with food providing the chance for life, whilst education gives the child a chance to escape the spiral of poverty.
