In April 2012, I ran the “toughest footrace on earth” in aid of the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund.

The “Marathon des Sables” was a 7 day / 154 mile endurance race across the Sahara Desert in Morocco where temperatures can reach in excess of 120 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. for the week I had to be self sufficient with only water provided, all food, clothing, sleeping bag etc for the week had to be carried from the start for the whole week.

I completed the event in just over 32 hours, coming a respectable 89th out of 853 competitors and the 13th Brit to cross the line.

I am now keeping the charity and the endurance events going, early May I am entering a 36 mile trail race which will be a nice warm up for the Ultra Trail South West 100 at the end of June, which as the name suggests, is a 100 mile, single stage non stop race around the trails of the South West Coastal Path. I have 36 hours to complete this and again have to be self sufficient

Having served in the Royal Marine Commandos for over 18 years, I have been unfortunate enough to have lost friends and colleagues to enemy action and I’ve also experienced the life changing injuries of fellow marines who sustain wounds leading to loss of limbs, permanent scarring and other severe injuries. I have witnessed the importance of ongoing aftercare for those unfortunate enough to sustain severe injuries and would like to do something worthwhile to pay back part of the debt we all owe these brave servicemen.
